Internships & Practicums
Galaxy Counseling Center is committed to the provision of a comprehensive clinical training program for masters and doctoral students from local and regional universities. Students have the opportunity to work directly with a wide variety of clients while supervised by a diverse clinical staff. The training program is most influenced by the following theories of human development and change: family systems, cultural-relational theory, psychodynamic-relational theory, solution-focused theory and cognitive behavioural theory.
Students and interns are accepted into the clinical training program via one of the following routes:
1) Practicum student group - Masters and doctoral students who meet the following requirements and are accepted into the program:
- Prior practicum placement or equivalent work experience
- Coursework in testing and assessment
- Coursework in family systems, psychotherapeutic theories, and child and adult development
- 20 hour weekly commitment for a minimum two semesters
- Commitment to two evenings or Saturday and one evening per week.
- Wednesday afternoons between 12:00 and 5:30 are non-negotiable required hours
2) LPC Internship - For professionals who have LPCI status, Galaxy offers an internship program to assist their completion of the 3000 hours of required supervised work. Galaxy has Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisors (LPCS) on staff who offer individual and weekly group supervision. LPC Interns are required to attend 1 hour of the weekly core clinical training as well.
Briefly, the training program makes the following provisions for accepted students:
- Individual and group psychotherapy supervision weekly
- Testing and evaluation supervision weekly for all students engaged in testing procedures
- 2 hours of core clinical training weekly including theory and application as well as internal clinical procedures
- Opportunities to co-lead psychoeducational groups
- Counseling experience in individual, couple, family, and play therapy
- Opportunity to conduct psychoeducational test batteries
- Case consultation with peers, community experts, and supervision staff
- Supervision of supervision groups for interns supervising practicum students
Interview Material Required:
- Resume highlighting coursework, previous practicums, and relevant work experience
- Transcript of completed coursework
- Three letters of reference
- Criminal background check
- Documentation verifying student liability insurance
Interview deadlines:
- Fall: June 1 st
- Spring: November 1 st
- Summer: March 31st
